Customer

The client is an American non-profit organization dedicated to mitigating climate change by promoting the development and deployment of low-carbon energy and climate-protecting technologies. Their mission focuses on reducing atmospheric pollution through research, advocacy, and collaboration with the private sector.

Challenge

The organization originally utilized an Excel-based Direct Air Capture (DAC) Life-Cycle Analysis (LCA) tool to evaluate the environmental impact of DAC technology. However, the Excel format presented usability and accessibility challenges, limiting broader adoption and engagement. The client needed a more user-friendly, modern, and intuitive web-based interface to enhance accessibility and effectiveness.

Cooperation

I collaborated with the client to develop a web-based version of the DAC LCA tool, transforming it from an Excel workbook into a streamlined, interactive online calculator. Key features included:

  • User-friendly input and output fields for two distinct LCA cases.
  • Responsive graphs to visualize and compare key outputs, such as tons of CO2e per ton removed.
  • Information icons and descriptive text to guide users through the tool’s functionalities.
  • A modern, accessible, and intuitive design to ensure ease of use for stakeholders.

Results

The transition from an Excel-based tool to a web-based platform significantly improved usability, engagement, and accessibility for stakeholders. The new interface enhanced data visualization, simplified input/output processes, and provided a more interactive experience for users. By modernizing the DAC LCA tool, the organization was better equipped to advance its mission of reducing atmospheric pollution and promoting sustainable climate technologies.
